Intervention

We offer individual and group intervention programs focused on literacy and language development and the management of childhood anxiety. Our pre-school program builds the foundations of literacy and learning to help prevent literacy difficulties. Our literacy intervention programs are appropriate for children with mild to severe difficulties in reading accuracy or fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, or writing. These evidence-based programs are effective for children of all abilities, including children with dyslexia, poor comprehension, and dysgraphia. Our childhood anxiety program is appropriate for children experiencing anxiety separately or in conjunction with additional developmental challenges.

Assessment

We offer two types of literacy assessments that can be administered together or separately:

1) Functional literacy assessments identify the key strengths and weaknesses of a child's literacy profile (e.g., specific consonant and vowel team knowledge, knowledge of the six syllable types, sight word knowledge, discrepancies between reading/spelling, accuracy/fluency, etc) and provide essential information for teachers and other educational professionals to help guide the development of IEPs and inform the scope and sequence of intervention/tutoring. Functional assessments are useful for identifying individual knowledge of key literacy skills and can be used to design intervention programs and track progress.

*Functional literacy assessments are included as part of all literacy intervention services provided by Rocky Mountain Literacy and Child Development. Families enrolled in literacy intervention do not need to arrange for a separate functional literacy assessment.

2) Literacy screenings use standardized measures to identify the extent to which a child is struggling in reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension, or spelling. These screenings provide an indication of the level of difficulty a child is experiencing and whether this difficulty is consistent with a profile of dyslexia or other specific literacy difficulty. The information gathered from this screening is used to make recommendations for services and accommodations needed to support a child's literacy development. Literacy screenings are useful as a first step in identifying the nature and severity of a child's difficulty.

Note: Our assessments are highly specific to literacy development and do not constitute comprehensive neuropsychological assessments. We ask families to fill out questionnaires and discuss all of their concerns regarding their child prior to administering any assessments. If concerns arise regarding additional areas of educational, psychological, or neurological functioning we will refer families to outside providers of comprehensive neuropsychological assessments.
